Why Lachen is not the same trip as Lachung
Guests often book “North Sikkim” as one place. It is two valleys that split after Chungthang.

Why book a private taxi from Bagdogra to Lachen?
Shared airport jeeps stop at Gangtok stands. They do not run to Lachen hotels, and they do not carry North Sikkim permits.

Distance: about 200–230 km from IXB to Lachen, depending on the Gangtok alignment and any NH10 diversion.
Time: 8–10 hours door to door if you drive through. Split the day and it becomes 4.5–5.5 hours to Gangtok, then 6–7 hours Gangtok to Lachen.

The last stretch is narrower, colder and more landslide-prone than the Lachung road in some seasons. Start from Bagdogra only if the flight is early morning. A 1:00 PM landing means you will reach Lachen after dark — we advise against that.

Direct taxi vs Gangtok overnight (what we recommend)
Option A — Direct Bagdogra Airport to Lachen taxi
Only if the flight lands by about 9:00–10:00 AM, permits are pre-arranged, and all guests can sit in a vehicle for most of the day.
Risks: altitude jump from ~400 ft to ~9,000 ft, fatigue before a 3:00 AM Gurudongmar start, ice or convoy delays after Mangan.
Option B — Bagdogra → Gangtok → Lachen (recommended)
Day 1: IXB pickup. Drive to Gangtok. Rest, hydrate, light dinner.
Day 2: Early departure to Lachen via Chungthang. Evening in the village.
Day 3: Gurudongmar Lake (Indians). Transfer to Lachung or return toward Gangtok.
This is how almost every reliable North Sikkim itinerary is sold. It protects the lake morning and keeps you off the high road after sunset.
Permits for Lachen and Gurudongmar
Lachen lies beyond Chungthang, so a Protected Area Permit (PAP) is mandatory for Indian and foreign guests.
Indian travellers
- Photo ID at Rangpo to enter Sikkim.
- PAP for Lachen / Thangu / Gurudongmar.
- Original ID + passport photos. Some posts are strict about ID type — send scans 24 hours ahead.
Foreign travellers
- RAP to enter Sikkim.
- PAP for Lachen village may be possible on a registered itinerary.
- Gurudongmar Lake is not open to foreign nationals because of its border location. Do not book a lake package for a foreign passport.
Permits are issued against a registered Sikkim tourist vehicle and dated itinerary. A random Bagdogra prepaid hatchback cannot take you through the last check posts.

Use an SUV. The Gurudongmar road from Lachen climbs through Thangu on broken, icy stretches. Ground clearance, heating and a driver who has done the lake run matter more than a cheaper sedan.

- If the flight is late, the cab waits. If it is too late for a safe Lachen arrival, we divert to Gangtok and continue north the next morning — we will say this on the call, not at midnight on NH10.
NJP and Siliguri pickups use the same highway after Siliguri.

Gurudongmar can close without notice after heavy snow. Your Lachen taxi is still useful for Thangu / Chopta if the last stretch is sealed.

- The lake run starts before dawn. A same-day airport-to-Lachen drive leaves no recovery time.
- Carry cash. ATMs and data are weak north of Mangan.

- Drink water, walk slowly, skip alcohol the first night.
