What this day trip includes?
Yumthang (about 12,000 ft) is a wide glacial valley: river, meadows, and—in April–May—rhododendrons. Hot springs sit a short walk from the usual parking belt. The road is rough, often icy in winter, and closed in patches after heavy snow.
This page is the day tour from Lachung.
If you are still at Bagdogra, use Bagdogra Airport to Yumthang Valley taxi.
If you are still in Gangtok, use Gangtok to Lachung taxi first.

Permits
Your PAP for Lachung should already list Yumthang (and Zero Point if requested). Carry:
- Original photo ID
- Permit copy (driver also carries the vehicle set)
- Passport / RAP for foreign guests
No new airport-style permit is issued in Lachung at dawn. If PAP was skipped on the way in, you will not enter the valley that morning.
Foreign guests are generally allowed Yumthang and Zero Point. They are not allowed Gurudongmar.

Same car as the Gangtok–Lachung run whenever possible. The permit is vehicle-specific.

- Severe AMS symptoms — stay in Lachung, do not climb
A slow valley stop without Zero Point is still worth the morning.

How pickup works
- Confirm date and Zero Point yes/no the evening you reach Lachung.
- Driver time locked (usually 6:30–8:00 AM).
- Hotel-gate pickup.
- Valley time as you wish, within daylight.
- Drop back at the hotel or onward to Gangtok if that was quoted.
Travel tips
- Wear layers; the valley is much colder than the hotel porch.
- Carry water; walk slowly.
- Keep ID in a jacket pocket for the check post.
- Do not plan shopping in Gangtok the same evening if you also want Zero Point.
- Cash for tea; network is weak.
