Timings and Availability: When to Catch a Shared Cab
Timing is everything when relying on shared transportation in the hills:
Morning Rush (Ideal Time): The best time to get a shared taxi is between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Vehicles fill up fast, and you won't have to wait long for the cab to depart.
Afternoon (Moderate Availability): Between 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM, taxis are still available but may take longer to fill up with 10 passengers before the driver agrees to leave.
Late Afternoon/Evening (Not Recommended): Shared taxis to Sikkim become very scarce after 3:30 PM. Driving in the hills after dark is generally avoided. If you arrive late at NJP or Bagdogra, you will likely need to book a dedicated private cab or stay overnight in Siliguri.
Where to Find Shared Taxis
At NJP Railway Station: As soon as you exit the station, you will see the pre-paid taxi counter and a large taxi stand. Drivers actively call out destinations like "Gangtok" and "Darjeeling."
In Siliguri: Head to the SNT (Sikkim Nationalised Transport) Bus Terminus located on Hill Cart Road, near Siliguri Junction. This is the most reliable hub for government buses and authorized shared cabs entering Sikkim.
In Gangtok (For Return/Onward Journeys): The Deorali Taxi Stand (about 2 km below the main MG Marg) is the main hub for shared taxis leaving Gangtok for NJP, Siliguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong.
Important Tips for Taking a Shared Cab in Sikkim
Luggage Space is Limited: Shared Sumos pack 10 passengers (2 in the front, 4 in the middle, 4 in the back). Large trolley bags are tied to the roof carrier. Carry a small daypack for your valuables to keep on your lap.
Buy Two Seats for Comfort: If you want more space, especially on the winding mountain roads, it is very common to pay for two seats for yourself.
Permit Areas: Shared taxis are great for point-to-point transit between major towns. However, for restricted areas like Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake, or North Sikkim (Lachen/Lachung), you generally need to book specialized tour packages through registered operators, as standard transit shared cabs do not run these routes.
Carry Cash: While UPI is widely accepted in Sikkim, network issues on the highway mean cash is still king when paying shared taxi drivers.
Need a Guaranteed Ride? Book a Private Taxi
While shared taxis are great for budget travel, they come with wait times, tight seating, and rigid drop-off points (they won't drop you at your hotel door).
If you are traveling with family, carrying heavy luggage, arriving late, or simply prefer a comfortable, direct ride straight to your hotel, Darjeeling Sikkim Taxi offers affordable private cabs from NJP and Bagdogra.
